In this interview the author of the best-selling Nautilus book series retraces his early training days with Arthur Jones and Casey Viator and talks about some of the golden-age bodybuilders who inspired him. At that time, Nautilus had three, state-of-the-art television studios in Lake Helen. The last of the three exercises: extremely slow leg presses, 4 repetitions in 120 seconds, will rock your world but good. In the middle of the Nautilus compound was a non-descript, 30- by 50-foot, metal building, which was the home of 40 large crocodiles that Jones had brought in from Jamaica. There we were with thousands of frustrated people and a couple of hours to burn. He was known for lifting over 900lbs in squats, and for weighing 275lbs of rock-solid muscle at one point. As a result, I gave him some articles by Arthur Jones to ponder. He quickly competed in and won the Junior Mr. America and IFBB Mr. America competitions. Sup with that? Not surprising to me, the addition of 18-1/2 pounds of muscle increased his resting metabolic rate by 530 calories, or 28.6 calories per pound of added muscle per day. This can be carried to a logical extreme. In early 1971, because of business and travel commitments, Jones stopped personally training Viator. Thanks to Lou Schuler, who did a superb job with editing my words, and Carol Angstadt, who made the format and illustrations pop with excitement, The New High-Intensity Training is going to be, in my opinion, my best book yet. With the do-it-yourself approach, your results will probably never be maximum. Ellington Darden: Lou Schuler, who was recently appointed editor of Rodales newest magazine called, Mens Health MUSCLE, asked me the same question a while back. What muscular biceps and full triceps he possessed. For more than ten years, Mentzer's Heavy Duty program involved 7-9 sets per workout on a three day-per-week schedule. With the advent of "modern bodybuilding" (where bodybuilders became more massive than ever before) by the early 1990s, he ultimately modified that routine until there were fewer working sets, and more days of rest. Ellington Darden: I have a couple of projects in the formative stages. In fact, NTF workouts may speed recovery by supplying some of the chemistry to guard against atrophy and to facilitate active rest. Ray Mentzer had a different viewpoint. Breakfast. If you are serious about your physique, youll seriously want to Are you tired, irritable, and lacking motivation? Question: Given your disdain for slow rep training, why did you not ask Dr. Darden specific questions as to why he felt slow training was so beneficial (which he does). My hamstrings seem very stubborn that way, and isometric exercise produces virtually no soreness there, as if Ive done next to nothing despite willing a 100% exertion. Finally, the storm cleared, and the three of us boarded the same plane to Daytona Beach. . I was impressed. However, a number of trainees seem to suffer overtraining even from such brief workouts once they genuinely achieve an intense level of effort. Twenty reps, Arthur repeated, after asking us about his progress, hell, he can do 50 with each leg. Over the next three minutes, Viator not only did 50 reps, but 2 more for good measure.
